Nearly 40 million Americans and 350 million people worldwide suffer from Arthritis. It plagues one out of every two adults over the age of 40. Most doctors recommend pain killers. The temporary relief treats the symptom and not the cause. Pain from Arthritis is caused by inflammation in the joints. There are a variety of Herbal alternatives with anti-inflammatory properties. Below are a few to consider:
New research published in the spring of 2012 showed that curcumin, the active ingredient in the curry spice turmeric, possesses potent anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties. Several years back, in 2006, another study also found that turmeric supplements, which contain curcuminoids, profoundly lessened joint inflammation and destruction, presumably by blocking inflammatory pathways and thereby preventing the increased production of a protein that triggers swelling and pain. Curcumin is most known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. It has been shown to influence more than 700 genes, and it can inhibit both the excessive activity and the synthesis of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX), as well as other enzymes that have been implicated in inflammation.
Graviola has a wide range of uses in traditional and herbal medicine. In various parts of the world, graviola is used to kill parasites and for its sedating properties, and for health disorders such as diabetes, heart conditions, liver problems, asthma and diarrhea and dysentery, as detailed by Greenwood Health System. A remedy for nerve pain, rheumatism and arthritis involves mixing the unripe fruit and leaf oil with olive oil and applying the remedy externally. Researchers have conducted numerous laboratory tests on the properties of graviola. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center summarizes some of the results. These studies show that extracts of graviola have antirheumatic and anti-inflammatory activity, as well as antinociceptive properties, or an ability to decrease sensitivity to pain. These features theoretically could make the substance useful for treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Graviola in test tubes also shows antiparasitic, antiviral, anticancer and astringent properties, and an ability to lower blood sugar. These benefits may not translate to humans, cautions Sahelian.
