Diabetes – Bitter melon is known around the world by various names such as bitter gourd, bitter squash or karela. It is a common remedy to overcome type-2 diabetes. This kind of diabetes is due to inability of a cell to absorb the sugar in the blood due to insufficient insulin or due to development of resistance to insulin. In either case, body cells become unable to absorb sugar due to the ineffectiveness of insulin produced. Moreover, the absorption of sugar occurs due to the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase in the cells. Bitter gourd activates these kinases and the absorption of sugar increases. And hence aids in bringing diabetes under control.
High Blood Pressure – Another common use of bitter melon is to lower blood pressure. Scientific studies have shown ingesting bitter melon lowered systolic blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure is the first number in the blood pressure ratio, and measures the force of the blood found in the arteries while the heart is beating. Systolic blood pressure is looked at to diagnose high blood pressure.
High Cholesterol – Several studies have shown significant decreases in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and increases in HDL cholesterol with bitter melon. Chemicals in bitter melon are thought to affect the activity of an enzyme that breaks up fats from the diet so they can be absorbed by the body. As a result, less cholesterol may be absorbed and more may be eliminated from the body.
Kidney Stones – Bitter melon can be helpful in ridding the body of kidney stones. It reduces excess acid in the body that leads to kidney stones and helps to maintain healthy liver and bladder function.
