If you're new to this amazing Superfood, it is a red algae that is packed with vitamins, minerals and many health benefits. Sea Moss or Irish Moss as it usually referred to in the Caribbean has many culinary applications--it can be added to smoothies, drink mixes, deserts and even used as a healthy thickening agent.
In this article, we'll focus on the preparation of the Sea Moss Gel and using it to make a few of my favorite smoothies. If you interested in learning more about Sea Moss itself, click here to read our 11 Sea Moss benefits that will change your life article.
How to make Sea Moss Gel
- The first step in using Sea Moss is preparing Sea Moss Gel. There are a variety of ways to make this. The first step common to all methods is washing and cleaning the raw Sea Moss. As it is harvested from the ocean and dried, it is usually clumped together with sand or other impediments. The best way to clean it is allowing it to soak in cold water for about ten minutes with lemon (to help remove freshness), then rinsing the Sea Moss while rubbing it with your fingers to shake loose any extra sand that may be stuck to it.
- Once the above step is complete, you now have two options--the traditional way that most Caribbean folk use is to boil the Sea Moss for 10-15 minutes with a few cinnamon sticks. It is then strained to remove any clumps and then refrigerated. The other option which I prefer is faster and you don't loose any Irish Moss in the straining process. I simply blend the washed Moss in hot water with the cinnamon sticks.
- The final step is simply to pour the mixture into a container and refrigerate. After a few hours the jello like Sea Moss Gel is created. It can now be easily added to smoothies and other recipes.
