Sea Moss in South Florida: How to Spot Real Wildcrafted Irish Moss

Sea moss questions are probably the ones we answer most at the counter. Where's it from? How do I know it's real? Why does the stuff I bought online look so different from yours?

That last question comes up a lot. So here's the honest guide we give in person, written down.

Pool-grown vs wildcrafted: what's the actual difference?

Most cheap sea moss on the market is pool-grown. It's farmed in tanks or shallow pools, often with added salt brine, and harvested fast. Wildcrafted sea moss grows in the open ocean, attached to rocks, pulled by hand the way it's been done in the Caribbean for generations.

Why does that matter? The ocean is a rougher place to grow up. Wildcrafted moss develops in moving salt water, real sun, real minerals. Pool moss grows in a controlled bath. They're not the same plant experience, and frankly, they don't look or smell the same either.

Sea moss has been a longtime part of Caribbean wellness routines, the ingredient behind the sea moss drinks and porridges most of our customers grew up on. If you're going to keep a tradition, keep it with the real thing.

How to spot the real thing with your own eyes

You don't need a lab. You need your hands and your nose.

Look at the color. Real wildcrafted Irish moss is naturally uneven. Tan, gold, cream, sometimes purple-ish strands mixed in. Pool-grown moss tends to look uniform and pale, almost bleached, with thick rubbery strands that are all suspiciously identical.

Feel it. Wildcrafted moss is thinner, wiry, a little brittle when dry. If it feels like fat rubber bands, be suspicious.

Smell it. This is the big one. Real sea moss smells like the ocean. Not overpoweringly fishy, just clean and briny, like a beach morning. Pool-grown moss often smells like almost nothing, or worse, like the salt it was packed in.

Check for salt. A light natural dusting is normal. A thick white crust means it was soaked in brine to add weight. You're paying sea moss prices for table salt.

Why we sell it raw and as gel

At both our shops we carry wildcrafted sea moss two ways: raw dried moss, and prepared gel.

Raw is for the people who want to do it themselves. Soak it, rinse it, blend it, the whole ritual. A little goes a long way, and plenty of our customers say the process is half the point. It's what their mothers did.

Gel is for everybody else. Same wildcrafted moss, already cleaned and prepared, ready to spoon into a smoothie or a pot of porridge. We blend it into our Sea Moss Smoothie at the Lauderdale Lakes juice bar every single day, so we go through it fast. Nothing sits.

If you're new to sea moss entirely, our herbal guide is a good place to get your bearings before you buy.

See it before you buy it

The nice thing about buying sea moss in person instead of from a photo online: you can hold the bag. Look at the strands. Give it a smell. We'd rather you inspect it, honestly. That's how you learn.

Find us at 4273 N State Rd 7 in Lauderdale Lakes, or 8026 W McNab Rd in North Lauderdale. Open Monday through Saturday 9am to 7pm, Sunday 11am to 5pm. Bring your questions. Sea moss questions are our favorite kind.
